SlaxSlax is a Linux distribution based on Slackware which is frugally installed. Updates and improvements are made following their introduction into Slackware. Frugal InstallMost computer operating systems are installed conventionally. When installed this way, files throughout the operating system are modified as it is used. As a result of malfunctions, user error, malware, or just because the operating system is imperfect, files may becomes corrupted, and it may not work properly, or even work at all. If an operating system is installed frugally, operating system files cannot be modified, so they cannot become corrupted. Personal files and settings can be saved, but operating system files are not modified. When the operating system starts, it is loaded to RAM, and runs from RAM. What is in RAM can be changed, but the original files can't. When the computer is turned off, everything in RAM is lost. When it starts again, the operating system is loaded to RAM again, so it always starts in a pristine state. If a problem did occur, you could delete personal settings and restart the computer. It would revert to how it was when first installed. Iptables FirewallIf you connect to the internet, the Iptables Firewall is ideal for security. Run from CD, USB or Hard DriveSlax can be run from the live CD It can also be installed on a USB or hard drive. Rescue ToolSlax is useful as a rescue tool. If another operating system, Linux or Windows, becomes unusable, Slax can be used to save personal files. The operating system can then be repaired or reinstalled. Live CD can be RemovedIf run from a live CD, the entire operating system can be loaded to RAM, and run from RAM, if the computer has at least 320 mb of RAM. So the CD can be removed, and the drive used for other purposes. Transfer to Another ComputerWhether run from a CD, USB or hard drive, it can be transferred to another computer, and Slax can be run from that computer. When most other operating systems are installed on a hard drive, if the hard drive was transferred to another computer, the operating system would not work, without being reinstalled, unless the computer was identical or very similar. RAMThe Slax operating system and programs run entirely from RAM, so if you install a lot of programs, you may need more RAM than most other operating systems. © Copyright Guy Shipard 2008 - 2009 |
