Flash Player

Flash Player may be installed in internet browsers to display moving images.

Things You Need

You need an internet browser installed. You must have started the internet brownser at least once.

You may have more than one internet browser, and Flash Player will be installed on all of them.

You need getFlash10 installed. This also installs dependencies.

Incompatible Browsers

Be aware, Mozilla Firefox and certain other browsers based on Mozilla Firefox, are not compatible with each other. You can install one or the other, but not both.

Mozilla Firefox, Opera and Seamonkey can coexist.

Install Flash Player

To install Flash Player, while connected to the internet, select getflash10 from the menu (right click).

It may take some time for Flash Player to be downloaded. A new extension will then be created containing Flash Player.

If you have a tce directory, the extension will be created in it.

If you don't have a tce directory, the extension will be created in /tmp/tce. You will need to create a tce directory and put it there.

Restart the computer for Flash Player to work.

If you want to, you may remove the getflash10 extension from the tce directory after installing Flash Player. You may also leave it there. Removing it will free up a small amount of RAM. It is a good idea is to put it in the /tce/optional directory, so you have it if you install a different browser in the future.

If you Install a Different Browser

If you install a different browser after installing Flash Player, and want Flash Player on it, delete the flash extension in the tce directory, and install Flash Player again.

If you want to Use Flash Player Only Sometimes

If you have Flash Player installed, it will display advertising.

If you don't have it installed, there may be things you want to view, but can't.

With Tiny Core, you don't need to use Flash Player all of the time, but can use it when you want.

To do this, put the flash extension in /tce/optional.

When you want to use Flash Player, open the Appbrowser. Click "File," then "Install Local." Select the flash extension, then click "OK." Click "Install" or "Mount."

For Flash player to work, close the internet browser, and restart.

Video Download Helper

If you use Mozilla Firefox, you can also install Video Download Helper. This enables you to download videos, and view them anytime. You can even convert videos to another format. You need a program for viewing them, such as Mplayer.

To install Video Download Helper, from Mozilla Firefox, click "Tools," then "Add-ons." Then click "See All Recommended Add-ons." When you find it, click "Add to Firefox."

Alternate Method

The above method is easy and all that is needed for most users. Following is an alternate method for those wanting to install Flash Player manually, or understand the process in more detail.

If you use this method, dependencies must be installed, but getFlash10 is not needed.

Download Flash Player

Option 1: Go to http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/. Download the file ".tar.gz for Linux."

Option 2: Go to http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player_10_linux.tar.gz. You will get a new window. Click "Save File."

Option 3: Use wget. Wget needs to be installed. Open the terminal and type:

wget http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player_10_linux.tar.gz

It will take some time for flash player to be downloaded.

Extract Flash Player

Open the Root Terminal and type:

cd (path)
tar xzf install_flash_player_10_linux.tar.gz

A new file called "libflashplayer.so" will be created.

Make an Extension for Flash Player

To make an extension, the squashfs-tools-4.0 extension needs to be installed.

Begin by creating directories. You may install Flash Player in more than one internet browser. Open the Root Terminal and type the following commands.

For Mozilla Firefox.

mkdir -p /home/myext/flash/usr/local/firefox-official/plugins

For Opera.

mkdir -p /home/myext/flash/usr/local/lib/opera/plugins

For Seamonkey.

mkdir -p /home/myext/flash/usr/local/seamonkey/plugins

For Minefield.

mkdir -p /home/myext/flash/usr/local/firefox/plugins

Copy and paste libflashplayer.so to each "plugins" directory.

To make a extension called "flash.tcz," open the Root Terminal, and type:

cd /home/myext
mksquashfs flash/ flash.tcz

Copy to TCE Folder

Copy and paste the new extension to the "tce" directory.

Turn the computer off and restart for Flash Player to be loaded.

Dependencies

To run Flash Player, Firefox does not need some of the dependencies which are required by Opera. If you have limited disk space, you may experiment to see which are not needed. Be aware, some dependencies are needed by other programs.
