Update Tiny Core

Newer versions of Tiny Core are released from time to time. You may want to update to a newer version.

If you are not familiar with installing Tiny Core, it may be installed as explained in Install on a Hard Drive While Connected to the Internet or Install on a Hard Drive Without Being Connected to the Internet.

Run from other Linux

To update Tiny Core, you need to be running from Linux other than the one you are updating, such as Linux from a live CD, Linux from a USB drive, or Linux from another partition in the computer. You may need to mount the partition Tiny Core is in.

Replace Tiny Core

Remove the old version of Tiny Core (the directory "boot" and its contents) and replace it with the new version of Tiny Core.

If you have grub in the boot directory, you will need to put it in the boot directory of the new version.

Tiny Core can be updated without being written to a CD. For more information, see Mount an ISO Image Without Writing it to a CD or DVD.

Delete Settings

When updating to some versions, other files are also changed. When updating to other versions, they are not.

You can look at the release notes for each new version, and see which files need to be modified.

If you are not sure, you can just delete all files containing settings, as follows.

If you use persistent home, save a copy of all files you don't want to lose from /home/tc, then delete /home/tc.

If you use persistent /opt, delete /opt.

If you use backup, delete mydata.tgz. This is normally in the tce directory.

You can leave the extensions in the tce folder as they are, so you do not need to download them again (see notes below).

After doing this, when you start the new version of Tiny Core, it will be the same as a new installation.

Update Microcore

When updating Microcore, use the same method. However, also update the other files used by Microcore. For more information, see Install Microcore.

Version 2.4

Prior to version 2.4, there were two extension types, tce and tcz. With 2.4 and following versions, there is only one extension type, tcz. There are now two options, Install and Mount, so what was previously being done with two extension types, is now being done with one extension type. In addition to eliminating tce extensions, there have also been changes to many tcz extensions. As a result, when updating from a version prior to 2.4 to a version after 2.4, delete all extensions and reinstall them.

November 2009

In November 2009, just prior to the release of version 2.6, extensions were converted to 4096 block size. If you installed extensions prior to November 2009, delete all extensions and reinstall them.

When Settings are Messed Up

If settings become messed up, you can also use this method.

If you use persistent home, save a copy of all files you don't want to lose from /home/tc, then delete /home/tc.

If you use persistent /opt, delete /opt.

If you use backup, delete mydata.tgz. This is normally in the tce directory.

After doing this, when you start Tiny Core, it will be the same as a new installation.

Update Tiny Core on a USB Drive

Tiny Core can be updated on a usb drive as follows.

Save a copy of any files you don't want to lose.

Save a copy of extensions.

Install the newer version of Tiny Core. For more information, see Install on a USB Drive.

Copy files and extensions back to the usb drive.
